My favorite part in ‘Twilight: Eclipse’

an excellent ‘review’ piece by Mel O : http://www.meldodiscontent.tumblr.com

‘When we were five, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our things were answers like astronaut, president, or in my case, princess. When we were ten, they asked us again. We answered - rock star, cowboy, or in my case, gold medalist. But now that we’ve grown up, they want a more serious answer. Well, how about this… Who the hell knows? This isn’t a time to make hard and fast decisions. This is the time to make mistakes. Take the wrong train and get stuck somewhere chill. Fall in love - a lot. Major in philosophy because there’s no way to make a career out of that. Change your mind. Then change it again because nothing is permanent. So make as many mistakes as you can. That way, someday, when they ask again what we want to be we won’t have to guess. We’ll know.’

    - Jessica (Anna Kendrick)’s valedictory speech at the high school graduation

THIS, my friends, is what you call ‘writing’. This is NOT by Stephenie Meyer (oh dear no!) but the incredible MELISSA ROSENBERG, who has been dutifully —albeit painstakingly— adapting Meyer’s super-thin-on-substance novels to the big screen these past few years.

When I saw the film, this stood out because I knew this speech wasn’t in the book. This was a device — a clever, wonderfully written one at that — to talk to the characters in the film and even us, the audience.

I’ve always been a fan of great graduation speeches since I’ve been deprived of good ones every time I graduated before. A graduation speech should be rooted in one’s personal experience yet also encompasses the general, so people could relate to it, nod in recognition, and be inspired. After all, we all experience the same things — only in slightly different ways. We’re all the same but not too. Aren’t we beautiful walking contradictions?

To Melissa Rosenberg, thank you for this speech. Screenwriters never get the accolades they usually deserve but for this piece of writing alone, I applaud you. You’ve made this film somewhat relevant. Stephenie Meyer should aspire to write like you.

(I will have my movie review in detail over at Livejournal).
